Frequently Asked Questions

What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a constantly varied program in which all multi-joint movements are natural to man and performed as hard as your brain pushes your body.  CrossFit in simple terms prepares you for any situation in your daily life. After becoming a CrossFitter, you can outrun a lifter, and out lift a runner.  You stay lean and will never become bulky (listen up, ladies!) Your independence in the real world will sky rockets because you have learned the correct technique to dead lift (pick up objects), clean(pick up an object and bring it to your chest), and push press ( pick up an object and put it overhead).

What am I paying for?
You are paying for personal training in a group setting.  You will receive shared attention with 1-10 other clients.  This means that you can have a personal trainer at a price you can afford with some independence.  Expect constant attention from your trainer during skill training and an extra push during your workout.  In addition, you will receive training on flexibility, mobility, and nutrition.

Why is the workout timed?
We have multiple answers for this question; first, timed workouts produce a competitive nature to fitness just as other sports do.  Competition encourages you to not give up and oftentimes push a little harder.  However, timed  results are a reflection of your performance; as you continue with the program you become stronger, faster, more agile, and more flexible.  We often look back at old results, and you’ll feel awesome about your accomplishments.

What is WOD?
WOD is the “Workout Of the Day.”  We program one daily workout that all clients perform.  The core workout can last between 5 minutes-25minutes on average and the movements/skills are ever changing.  We definitely utilize your entire hour with us.  Prior to the workout, we include a guided warm up, mobility workout to enhance flexibility, stretching, and re-introduction of skills for the current day’s WOD.

Can I get a good workout in 30 minutes?
Yes! Hoosier CrossFit confidently endorses short intense workouts as science has proved these workouts yield greater benefits and results.  We constantly vary load, distance, and speed in any given workout.  We will mix up aerobic and anaerobic exercises, plus sometimes focus on just strength, or other times focus on just speed.  When you show up on a regular basis, we promise RESULTS ARE TYPICAL and they stay that way!

Can I do CrossFit with a previous back/knee injury?
We have experience with many clients who have found relief from pain by strengthening the muscles around the problem areas.  Our education on proper form with natural movements, technique, scaling load, and intensity is taken seriously throughout On-Ramp so we can meet the needs of all clients.

Do I need to be fit before doing CrossFit?
We scale load and intensity, not programming.  Adults, athletes, and the elderly can work side by side in any one of our workouts.  Your personal trainer will determine your load, and you will determine your intensity.

What results can I expect?
You can expect to get in the best shape of your life with Hoosier CrossFit. Melt away unwanted pounds, keep them off, and cut your personal training fees by ¾. You can also expect to get better core strength and a tighter backside, as well as functional strength and agility that apply to sports and everyday life.

On the Membership page, I don’t see a package to come 2 times/week for group training.  Why don’t you offer this? We have two answers for this.  On Ramp is an intensive skill workshop for beginners in which you will have learned all skills ready for regular ongoing classes. CrossFit involves  constantly varied programming, meaning every day you will have a different workout utilizing different skills.  You need to come at least 3x/week (4 is better, and 5-6 is suggested for optimal athletic performance)  to be able to maintain a certain level of skill with others in the class.    Alternatively, we offer private training 2x/week  for $300, equivalent to $37.50 per class.

Do I need to be a serious athlete to do CrossFit ?
One of the best things about Hoosier CrossFit is that every program is scalable to each individual’s fitness level, so whether you’re a serious athlete or working out for the first time, you’ll feel like you’re in the right place.

Do you offer private training?
Yes!  We provide private training if you are seeking more personal attention in a variety of capacities including, but not limited to, olympic lifting, multisport, pregnancy, post-rehab strength and conditioning.  Contact shaun@hoosiercrossfit.com for more info.

How many times do you recommend coming in for beginners?
We recommend three times per week to get the benefits that we advocate.  After your first couple weeks you can up your attendance to 5 days a week.

Should I rest when I’m sore?
Programming rest days are just as important as the programming for the workouts themselves. We strive to provide the best possible programming and scaling for each individual we work with. For a more in depth explanation of our programming for rest days, training days and beyond, ask Shaun@hoosiercrossfit.com otherwise  if you do rest, we suggest that you take no longer than 2 days.
